Another day, another workout. This one was only a partial workout, but it was still better than nothing.
The most important step toward your goal is always the first one, especially when you’re trying to get moving again.
Getting to the gym is very important. It’s a hell of a lot better than not getting there. What you do once you arrive is another question.
I suppose you could show up, look around and leave. And it sounds nuts, but honestly, that is actually better than not showing up at all. I mean, that might be a questionable use of a gym membership, but it would at least be a first step. The point is to start moving forward.
Today I attempted my first leg workout in quite a while, but I didn’t get very far. During my second set, my left leg started hurting in a way I recognized immediately: Stop.
I think you can reward yourself for showing up. But you do not get a reward for pushing through an injury and making it worse.
I know from experience how much it sucks to get sidelined by an injury just as you’re getting back into the swing of things. So be careful.
Right now, I’m retraining myself to take those first steps while also making sensible decisions. I say it all the time on this channel: this isn’t a race. It’s about forming habits that can last.
Whatever your own goals are, remember that you’re not alone. I have to remember this all the time: take the first step.
Just commit to the first one. Once you’ve done that, you can figure out the next step. And then the one after that.
But you absolutely have to take that first step. Because nothing happens if you don’t.
